How to know your Color Palette - What is my Color Season? [Personal Color Analysis]

Still don't know what your Dress color palette is that will help you make fashion purchases that make your best look shine? In many places on the internet you will find difficult ways to calculate the color palette, but in this article a very simple explanation awaits you to calculate your color palette.

Author of the article: Olalla Mellado Digital editor of trends.

In this article I will explain how to know your color palette to wear with my extended Color Analysis theory of the 28 seasons, much more complete and accurate than many you will find on the net. Remember that you can do my Free Color Analysis Test to find out your colorimetric season and subseason in a few seconds.

On the Internet you will find the 12 seasons theory, the 14 seasons theory, but much more hidden you will find the 24 seasons theory, and the more complete 28 seasons theory, which is the advanced and extended version of these techniques. But before you start you have to understand all the basics about Color Analysis.

What is Color Analysis

The Color Analysis is a measurement system of the personal chromatic scale that in fashion will help you to know which color tones favor you the most, due to your skin, hair and eyes characteristics.

You must understand the characteristics of your skin, hair and eyes because if you don't understand them, the result of the Color Analysis test will come out better. It is at this moment that it is not worth saying that your eyes are Lights if they are dark, just because Lights are seen in the light. Or say that you are blonde just because your hair lightens in the sun (I have that type of hair, which is naturally dark blonde, so it normally looks dark and in the light it looks orange, however it is dark hair because nobody could say that my hair is Light most of the time).

Well, it is this type of errors that you are going to avoid and you will only avoid them by knowing the color parameters and the Color Analysis rules that apply to hair, skin and eyes.

The color parameters are as follows

  • warm/cool: A cool color is a color without orange or gold tones, for example, ash blonde or ash brown that are neither gold nor orange. A warm color is golden or orange, like that of natural redheads (orange, not people who dye themselves red or maroon).

  • dark/Light: a dark color is one that is not very bright, that has little white in its mixture, and a Light color is a color that has white in its mixture.

  • Bright/soft: a Bright color is one that is pure and does not show other colors in it. soft on the contrary is a color that has other colors. Imagine a white marble with gray betas, that would be a soft color because white has other gray colors in it.

The rules of Color Analysis

The Color Analysis rules that apply to hair, skin and eyes will help you not to get confused in Light with dark, Bright with soft, warm with cool

It is true that you will be tired of seeing on social networks that each person applies them the way they want and call themselves blonde or brunette as they want.

But, I'm honest, these Color Analysis rules were created by me after doing many exercises with photos of celebrities and seeing that they all coincided. The truth is that as soon as you know them, it's super easy to even see a person and know what season they are in (the subseason, if you're not very expert, you'll only know by doing the calculation, not just by looking at the person).

The rules for the cool/warm parameter are as follows:

  • Your hair is cool if you don't see orange or gold tones in low light. Otherwise it is warm. (Do cool or warm Skin Test)

  • Your eyes are cool if they look orange, not greenish-brown, or golden in low light. Otherwise it is warm. (Yes, if your eyes are brown, but they look like coca cola, they are warm, another thing is that they are dark. There really is a cool brown color, but it does not have orange tones, or dark or brown.)

  • Your skin is cool if it has rosy cheeks. It's also cool if it's a dull or grayish brown. If your skin has golden or brown cheeks or a golden tan then it is warm skin.

The rules for the dark/Light parameter are as follows:

  • Your hair is dark if people can't tell it's light. Otherwise it is Light.

  • Your eyes are Lights if you can still see Lights half a meter away. If they are not darks.

  • Your skin is Light if it is white or almost white or has a Light tan. Otherwise it is dark.

The rules for the Bright/soft parameter are as follows:

  • Your hair is Bright if it has only one color. If it has color changes such as darker areas and more Lights, it is soft hair.

  • Your skin is soft if it has dark circles, moles, marks, pimples, freckles, a beard or changes in tone that are from birth, such as when we have marks on our nose from blowing our noses at people who have allergies and These marks always remain. Also burns or scars. Otherwise, if you don't have any imperfections, it's Bright skin.

  • Your eyes will be Brights if they only have one color, if they have several then they are soft eyes.

In the end, I invite you to do the calculation yourself with paper and pencil as I explain later and you will see that this is true. It is not invention, it is trial and error, it is a technical calculation and gives us security to know our Color Analysis.

How to know which is the Color Analysis to wear

The Dress Color Analysis is divided into 4 specific colorimetric seasons: Winter, Summer, Spring and Autumn.

Autumn and Spring are warm seasons, but Winter and Summer are cool seasons. Under these four seasons, there are 7 subseasons that are made up of the color parameters that characterize each colorimetric season:

  • Color Analysis Winter: Winter True, Winter cool, Winter Bright, Winter Deep, Winter Bright Deep, Winter cool Deep, Winter cool Bright.

  • Color Analysis Summer: Summer True, Summer Light, Summer cool, Summer soft, Summer Light soft, Summer cool soft, Summer Light cool.

  • Color Analysis Spring: Spring True, Spring warm, Spring Bright, Spring Light, Spring Bright Light, Spring warm Light, Spring Light warm.

  • Color Analysis Autumn: Autumn True, Autumn warm, Autumn Deep, Autumn soft, Autumn soft Deep, Autumn warm soft, Autumn warm Deep.

To determine how to know your color palette you simply have to fill in the following table that I show you below, with 3 points for the skin, 2 points for the hair and 1 point for the eyes:

colorimetry test table

When you are done you will have to add each column so that in the last row you get the final results. You must add each parameter of each season. The season you get the most points will be your main season:

Spring: Bright + Light + warm
Summer: Light + cool + soft
Winter: Bright + cool + dark
Autumn: dark + warm + soft

What is my Color Analysis subseason

To know your subseason you will have to take the data of the winning season and order them from highest to lowest and check your test results by looking for them below to know which subseason you are:

  • Si todas los 3 parámetros de la season son iguales tu subseason es True, eres una season True.

  • Si solo tienes un único parámetro mayor entonces tu subseason es la que marque ese parámetro, por ejemplo, si tus valores resultado dentro de Winter son: Bright 6, cool 3 y dark 3, tu subseason es Bright, eres Winter Bright.

  • If you have two equal parameters then you are a composite subseason, for example if you are Winter and your results are: Bright 6, cool 6 and dark 3, then since the cool and Bright parameters are equal your subseason is Bright cool , you are Winter Bright cool, and your color palettes will be both Winter cool and Winter Bright.

  • If two seasons coincide, then you will have to repeat the test again because you have indicated some data in the wrong way because perhaps you have not been able to correctly interpret some of your characteristics.

Color Analysis Season Winter

The Color Analysis Winter season is a cool season and it is really important and relevant since the majority of Spanish and Latin American women concentrate on this season due to the fact that they are mostly brunettes, although we also find dark brown people to a lesser extent in Autumn and to an even lesser extent in Summer.

Some celebrities who exemplify the Winter season in its different subseasons are Kim Kardashian, Anne Hathaway, Selena Gómez or Penélope Cruz:

For a person to be Winter like Color Analysis they must have a Bright, or cool or dark appearance or share several characteristics.

The brightness tells us that the person has hair of a single color, it does not have nuances such as highlights or highlights caused by dye. We are talking about a homogeneous hair of a single color. Of eyes with a single color, and of a skin where there are no imperfections such as spots, freckles, moles, dark circles, etc.

The cool parameter tells us about hair, skin, and eyes where their color is a cool color that does not have golden undertones, such as dark brown hair colors without reflections, black, gray gray or white, or Lights brown without reflections of any kind, that is, ash brown. The eyes to be cools will be gray, green or blue of a single color, black, or dark brown. A cool skin will normally be one that is dull brown, white or medium brown skin with rosy cheeks.

The dark parameter of Winter's Color Analysis tells us about hair, eyes or skin with dark tones. It is the easiest parameter to determine.

There are subseasons of Winter that you can belong to:

  • Color Analysis Subseason Winter Bright: in the case of a person with a Winter Bright appearance, we realize that they are those with dark hair and very white skin that contrast a lot with each other or just the other way around, very dark skin and very Light hair.

  • Color Analysis Subseason Winter cool: This is commonly a person whose appearance is between Winter cool and Winter Deep, which is generally speaking equivalent to a dark-haired person with skin that is between brunette and Light.

  • Color Analysis Subseason Winter Deep: This is a person with dark hair and dark brown skin. With most of his traits or two of his traits out of three they will be cool. Like for example, cool skin and hair and warm eyes would be a perfect description of this subseason.

  • Color Analysis Subseason Winter True: A Winter True is a person whose Bright, Cool, and Dark parameters are equivalent. It would be the most faithful expression of the Winter season.

However, there are also other subseasons that combine the previous ones and that help us define appearances that are intermediate, so that we can apply the color palettes more accurately:

  • Color Analysis Subseason Winter cool Deep: These are dark-skinned people with cool skin, that is, it is neither light nor dark, but has a greater tendency to dark. The parameters of this subseason are the same as those of the Winter cool subseason but with a higher dark parameter. For this person combine the Winter Deep Color Palette, and the Winter Cool Color Palette.

  • Color Analysis Subseason Winter cool Bright: This is a person with neither Light nor Dark skin tending to have Lighter than Dark skin. The parameters of this subseason are the same as those of the Winter cool subseason but with a higher Bright parameter. For this person combine the Winter cool Color Palette, and the Winter Bright Color Palette.

  • Color Analysis Subseason Winter Bright Deep: A person of Winter Bright Deep appearance is a person who has dark features in their appearance but highly contrasts with each other. In this subseason we will see that they combine the Winter Bright and Winter Deep color palettes.

To find out what your subseason is, after filling in the Color Analysis Test table, you must order the cool, bright and dark parameters from highest to lowest and look for your result in the following list:

  • If cool = Bright = dark you are Winter True.

  • If cool is greater than Bright and dark, you are Winter cool.

  • If Bright is greater than cool and dark you are Winter Bright.

  • If dark is greater than cool and Bright you are Winter Deep.

  • If Bright is equal to dark and they are the two highest values, you are Winter Bright Deep.

  • If cool is equal to dark and they are the two highest values, you are Winter cool Deep.

  • If cool is equal to Bright and are the two largest values subseason Winter cool Bright.

Winter color palettes are: Bright and pure colors for Winter Bright, slightly less Bright for Winter cool and very dark for Winter Deep.

Next, I share with you the color palettes of each Winter subseason:

Color Analysis Season Summer

Summer is a cool season, that is, the appearance of the people of the Summer season have most of their features (hair, skin, eyes) in cool tones without golden or orange tones. It is usually a soft and angelic appearance, although they may be people with dark hair, they will always have a component of innocence and softness in their tones.

Some of the celebrities who coincide with the Summer season in their Color Analysis, each one in different subseasons, are Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning, Barbara Palvin or Kate Middleton:

The parameters that characterize the skin, hair and eyes of the Summer season are the following:

The Light parameter defines the light colors few darks. Light hair and eyes are easy to define, and you can be guided by the question, can people say that I have Light hair? Can people say that I have Light eyes? in order to be more objective with our response. You can know if Light skin is like this if it answers the question: Can people say I'm brunette? otherwise you have white skin.

The cool parameter defines blue, green, gray, brown and black eyes without golden or light brown tones, that is, without warm colors. The hair will be cool if it does not have golden or orange reflections, that is, they are ash colors such as ash browns, ash blondes or black hair. Your skin will be cool if you have rosy cheeks or a grayish brown.

The soft parameter defines skin with imperfections such as freckles, blemishes, moles, ears or color changes. Soft eyes are those that have more than one color. Soft hair is one that changes shades due to dye because it has dye highlights or dye highlights, that is, they have various colors.

To know if you are Summer, my very complete technique of the 28 colorimetric subseasons will help you determine exactly if you are Summer and your subseason.

First you must fill in the following table scoring skin with 3 points, hair with 2 and eyes with 1 for the parameters cool, warm, dark, Light, Bright and soft:

colorimetry test table

When you have filled in the table you must add each column in the last row and at this moment proceed to make the sum for each main colorimetric season. The season with the highest score is your season:

Spring: Bright + Light + warm
Summer: Light + cool + soft
Winter: Bright + cool + dark
Autumn: dark + warm + soft

Within the Color Analysis of Summer there are a series of subseasons under which the appearance of a person can be classified. There are concretely 7 subseasons of Summer if we focus on the 28 subseasons theory.

Subseasons can be primary or secondary. The primaries are the essential subseasons of the season, and the secondaries are formed from the main ones.

The main subseasons are 4 and are as follows:

On the other hand, the secondary seasons formed from the primaries have as color palettes the combinations of the corresponding primaries. They are as follows:

  • Color Analysis Summer Light cool: this subseason combines that of Summer Light and Summer cool, both color palettes look good on a Summer Light cool person, and this is because the A person's appearance includes both softness and coldness in them.

  • Color Analysis Summer soft cool: Both the Summer soft and Summer cool palettes work for a Summer soft cool person. This look has both soft and cool features.

  • Color Analysis Summer Light soft: The Summer Light palette and the Summer soft palette can be used by a person with a Summer Light soft appearance. It is an appearance that combines the soft and light parameters as the main parameters of its appearance.

If in the previous section your main season is Summer, then order Light, cool and soft from highest to lowest and look for your result in the following list to find out which season you are:

  • If your cool, soft and light parameters are the same you are Summer True.

  • If the largest value is cool then you are Summer cool.

  • If the highest value is Light then you are Summer Light.

  • If the highest value is soft then you are Summer soft.

  • If the parameters soft and Light are equal to and greater than cool then you are Summer soft Light.

  • If the parameters soft and cool are equal to and greater than Light then you are Summer soft cool.

  • If the parameters Light and cool are equal to and greater than cool then you are Summer Light cool.

The color palettes for Summer are grayish colors, that is, they have a touch of gray. For Summer soft they are colors between Lights and darks, closer to darks and very greyish, somewhat less darks being greyish for Summer cool, and more Lights but greyish for Summer Light.

The palettes you will see below are the Summer color palettes:

Color Analysis Sesason Autumn

The Autumn Color Analysis is a way of measuring the tonality of people's appearance through the characteristics of their skin, hair and eyes that have large values of the parameters dark, warm and soft.

Some celebrities who are subseasons of Autumn are Jennifer López, Penélope Cruz, Eva Longoria or Rihanna:

As you can see, they are all characterized by being people with warm hair or skin and warm eyes. In general, people from the Autumn season always have at least two characteristics between their hair, skin and eyes that are warm, that is, they have warm tones.

They are characterized by being people with mostly dark parameters,

The characteristics of the color of the Autumn Color Analysis are the parameters: dark, warm and soft.

Each of these parameters of the Autumn Color Analysis season means a different concept:

  • Dark parameter: it occurs in your appearance if you have dark hair, eyes and skin, that is, the color has little white, it is not very bright. It is not necessary to have dark skin, hair and eyes at the same time to be from the warm season of Autumn, as happens with the other parameters explained below.

  • Soft parameter: refers to hair with color changes such as highlights or dye highlights, eyes of various shades, and skin that has imperfections or features such as moles, freckles , dark circles or spots.

  • Warm parameter: it is intrinsic to the Autumn season. A warm hair will be that golden, coppery or orange either completely or in parts, not including those hairs that are only warm in sunlight. The eyes will be warm in the same way when they have honey, Light brown or brown tones. And the skin is warm if the person's cheeks are not pink, whether they are brown or not.

If you are season Autumn in your Color Analysis then you are one of the subseasons of Autumn. There are seven subseasons of Autumn, among which there are 1 True, 3 main and 3 derived or secondary.

The Autumn subseasons and their color characteristics are as follows:

  • Autumn True: is the pure season of Autumn. It reflects 100% what an Autumn appearance is. Its soft, warm and deep parameters have the same value, so they are harmonics within the appearance.

  • Autumn soft: you will be Autumn soft in the event that your appearance, in addition to being warm and dark, has as its main characteristic that the soft parameter is the one that attracts the most attention, such as a hair of different shades or skin with freckles or imperfections.

  • Autumn Deep: in contrast to Autumn soft, Autumns Deep are the darkest in hair and skin, closer to the Winter season but with warm tones that, unlike Winter, are characterized by cool tones without golden or orange reflections in its appearance.

  • Autumn warm: this subseason occurs between Autumn Deep and Autumn soft people. They are warm people with a tan between Light and dark.

The secondary subseasons derived from Autumn that are born by combining the main ones and with the aim of correctly applying the color palettes, tell us that for the same person the two color palettes of the seasons that combine are valid because they have parameters of both main seasons:

  • Autumn warm Deep: Autumn warm Deep people are people who are warm and dark at the same time as their main appearance feature. The color palettes for this season are Autumn Warm and Autumn Deep.

  • Autumn warm soft: Autumn warm soft people are soft people, that is, relatively Light within this season but who tend to be warm. It is between the Light and the warm. The color palettes for this season are Autumn warm and Autumn soft.

  • Autumn soft Deep: Autumn soft Deep people are people who have dark features but also soft within the Autumn. The color palettes for this season are Autumn Soft and Autumn Deep.

To know your Autumn color palette, you must necessarily know which subseason of Autumn you are, since there is one or more color palettes for each subseason.

After filling in the table seen above, you must then add all the columns and order the soft, warm and dark parameters from highest to lowest and look for your result in the following list to find out your subseason:

  • If the warm, soft and dark values are equal you are Autumn True.

  • If warm is the highest value you are Autumn warm.

  • If dark is the highest value you are Autumn Deep

  • If soft is the highest value you are Autumn soft.

  • If soft and dark are equal to and greater than warm you are Autumn soft Deep.

  • If warm and soft are equal to and greater than dark you are Autumn warm soft.

  • If dark and warm are equal to and greater than soft you are Autumn warm Deep.

Autumn's color palette is warm colors ranging from more darks for Autumn Deep, intermediate for Autumn warm and less darks for Autumn soft.

These are the color palettes of all Autumn subseasons:

Color Analysis Season Spring

The Spring season as Color Analysis is warm, that is, it is characterized by golden and coppery orange tones, as well as Brights, Lights and warms skins.

Red hair in itself is not warm hair, but cool, unlike natural red hair, which is coppery orange, it is warm. Therefore, if you have red hair, it is most likely that you are Winter, but when you take your Color Analysis Test, you should rate red hair as cool.

Julia Roberts, Emma Stone, Blake Lively or Rachel Adams are celebrities who in these specific photographs are people who belong to Color Analysis Spring.

The Spring season is characterized by three parameters that must be met to a greater or lesser extent in your hair, skin and eyes:

The brightness parameter: Bright hair means hair of a single color without streaks or highlights. A Bright skin will be a skin without imperfections, that is, without pimples, freckles, moles or spots. Brights eyes will be eyes of a single color.

The warmth parameter: a warm skin will be that with a golden tone, whose cheeks will be yellowish, golden or golden brown. A warm hair is a hair with a golden or coppery tone visible without light. Warm eyes will be those with golden, honey or brown tones.

The parameter clarity: a Light skin will be one that is not dark. Lights eyes will be those that continue to see Lights half a meter from the eyes. And a Light hair will be one that can be said to be not dark.

To know if Spring is your Color Analysis season, you must fill in the following table with a 3 for the skin, a 2 for the hair and a 1 for the eyes:

tabla test colorimetria

When you are done you must upload the values of each column in the last row and then take the parameters of each season and add them as you will see now:

Spring: Bright + Light + warm
Summer: Light + cool + soft
Winter: Bright + cool + dark
Autumn: dark + warm + soft

If the season that has added the most is Spring, you are in luck because you were right and your season is Spring and you can go on to find out your subseason.

If you're wondering what colors look good on you if you're Color Analysis Spring you won't know if you don't know what your subseason is.

Within Spring's Color Analysis there are specifically 7 subseasons under which we can classify our appearance if we focus on the 28 subseasons theory. The subseasons will be primary, which are the essential subseasons of the season, or secondary formed from the main ones.

There are four main Spring subseasons and they are the ones you can see below:

  • Color Analysis Spring True: it is the truest season and is understood as pure since it defines the appearance of a person as the true Spring because it has the same number of color parameters in clarity, brightness and warmth.

  • Color Analysis Spring Light: a Spring Light is a person who essentially has a Light aspect which is their most striking feature. Even so, it has warms and brights characteristics.

  • Color Analysis Spring warm: A Spring warm is an essentially warm appearance, which also shares Lights and Brights characteristics. This means that its highest parameter in the Color Analysis Test will be warm.

  • Color Analysis Spring Bright: a Bright subseason within Spring is a Color Analysis in which the definition of the Bright parameter mostly defines the person's appearance.

Secondary seasons are formed from the primaries and have the two corresponding primaries as color palettes:

  • Color Analysis Spring warm Bright: this is a subseason that combines the parameters Warm and Bright, being in an average term between them and the Light parameter to a lesser extent. For this subseason, the Spring warm and Spring Bright color palettes are valid.

  • Color Analysis Spring Light warm: it is a subseason that joins the Light and the warm, being in an average term between them and with the Bright parameter to a lesser extent. For this subseason, the Spring warm and Spring Light color palettes are valid.

  • Color Analysis Bright Light: it is a subseason that joins Bright and Light, being in a middle ground between them and with the warm parameter to a lesser extent. For this subseason the Spring Light and Spring Bright color palettes are valid.

Calculating your Spring subseason is even easier. If in the previous step you got season Spring as your season Spring, then take the result you got for Bright, Light, warm and order them from highest to lowest.

You should note which of the following results match your parameters:

  • If the parameters Light, warm and Bright are equal then you are Spring True.

  • If the warm parameter is the largest then you are Spring Bright.

  • If the Bright parameter is the largest then you are Spring Bright.

  • If the Light parameter is the largest then you are Spring warm.

  • If the parameters Bright and warm are equal to and greater than Light then you are Spring warm Bright.

  • If warm and Light are equal to and greater than Bright then you are Spring warm Light.

  • If Bright and Light are equal to and greater than warm then you are Spring Bright Light.

The Spring Color Palettes are Brights warm colors but Lights. For Spring Light they are very Light Brights colors, somewhat less Lights for Spring warm and much less Lights for Spring Bright.

The following color palettes are assigned to each Spring subseason:
